Rugby fans will get a rare opportunity to take in world-class competition when the 2012 International Rugby Board Americas Rugby Championship comes to Langford in October. Rugby Canada's international 15s team will be joined by teams from the United States, Uruguay and Argentina for games on October 12, 16 and 20.
This marks only the third time will be held, with the inaugural tournament having taken place in 2009. All games will be played at City Centre Park in Westhills Stadium (formerly Bear Mountain Stadium, after Argentina, the original host country, was unable to take the event on.
Rugby Canada CEO Graham Brown welcomed the opportunity to host the event at Rugby Canada's High Performance training centre in Langford. "It makes it that much more special," Brown said. "We have had so much great support from the entire community since we moved here. We know this tournament is going to be a great success for Canadian rugby and for the local community."
Mayor Stew Young said landing a tournament of this stature is exactly what Langford Council had in mind when they created world-class facilities.
"This will be a tremendous event for Rugby Canada and our community," Young said. "It will be really exciting for sports fans, and will help spread the growing popularity of rugby on the Island. It will also be a boost for local businesses as well."
