Christmas came on Halloween for students in Langford with the announcement that the provincial government will provide $50 million in funding to replace Belmont secondary School. B.C. Education Minister George Abbott attended Belmont secondary on Monday, Oct. 31, to officially announce the $100 million decision, which includes another $50 million for a new school at Royal Bay in Colwood.
The news was applauded by the Sooke School District, which has been lobbying for a replacement for the aging Belmont school for years. The new school will be built on the site of the former Glen Lake elementary School, which will enable future students to walk to Langford's recreational facilities and sports fields at City Centre Park. The new facility is expected to open within the next three or four years.
Langford Mayor Stew Young, a former Belmont student, has advocated for a new school to accommodate the growing population and the need for a modern school in Langford. "This is great news for the future of Langford," Mayor Young said. "I'm sure our residents and students appreciate the commitment the provincial government has made, and look forward to the opening of the new school."
