Thousands of people came out to City Centre Park on Saturday, October 22nd to share in the excitement of the official grand opening of Westhills Arena, Langford Lanes and Goudy Field. The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development and Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, and the Honourable Ida Chong, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development for the Province of B.C., joined Mayor Stew Young and Langford Council for the ribbon-cutting ceremony in Eagle Ridge Community Centre.

"This is an exciting day for Langford," Mayor Young said to an ovation from the enthusiastic crowd. "We can all be proud of what we have accomplished here at City Centre Park in building recreation for everyone."

Mayor Young thanked Minister Duncan and Minister Chong for their support and funding for the project. He also expressed gratitude to Langford Council, City staff, and all of the businesses, sponsors, workers and volunteers for their efforts. The $15.6 million project was made possible through a partnership between Langford and the federal and provincial governments.

Westhills Arena, a 400-seat, NHL-sized rink, will address the growing demand for ice time for youth. An innovative ice river connects the arena to an outdoor skating area, which converts to a Splash Park during the summer. Langford lanes features 20 10-pin lanes, a restaurant/lounge, snack bar and arcade and a private VIP section for special functions. Goudy Field gives City Centre Park benefits youth by providing another artificial all-weather turf field for a variety of sports, and will become the new home for Rugby Canada's national men's and women's teams in 2012.
