Langford Welcomes Rugby Canada!
The opening of the Rugby Canada facilities in City Centre Park is an exciting achievement for the City of Langford!
The Canadian Men's' and Women's Rugby Olympic Teams and the Under 20's teams will enjoy the benefits of playing on International-standard turf fields, a newly constructed headquarters painted bright red and black - a nod to team colours, a scrimmage facility at Upper Goudy Field, and a well-appointed suite in Bear Mountain Stadium for officials and events. In addition, The City has provided Rugby Canada with a new state-of-the-art performance weight training facility on the mezzanine at Eagle Ridge Arena. Players can train year round indoors complimented by a high-tech medical facility with professionally trained staff at this rehabilitation and injury treatment facility.
Rugby Canada's presence in Langford will promote national and international interest and create pride and spirit within our city for the high level of recreation facilities we enjoy. Rick Mercer, of the Rick Mercer Report on CBC, was here recently interviewing Team Canada rugby players, and made an amusing rugby debut on the turf himself! International rugby matches hosted at the City Centre Park facilities against the world's best, will provide for high-end entertainment and excitement value. Given the fan-base, not just on the Island but throughout BC and Canada, Langford's vision to become a recreation hub for Vancouver Island is more than met in this latest venture!
The inspiring young athletes of Rugby Canada bring many exciting benefits to our community. World class coaching and training will provide mentorship to local Vancouver Island rugby clubs, as well as a proposed Rugby Academy at the new Belmont High School. Another proposal in the works is the construction of new residences to house the athletes, many of which will be living in Langford while they train for eight months of the year. This will have obvious economic spin-offs back into the community.
"Rugby is a rising sport, and it is great to have it as part of our community in what is developing into a tremendous sporting campus." -Mayor Stew Young
"This is world class and will allow for a tremendous amount of athlete involvement in the community." - Graham Brown, CEO Rugby Canada
